Adventures in Paris and Switzerland...

A couple of months ago I went to visit some of my friends in Europe, it has taken me a while to post a blog about my trip but here it is now...
I started out in Paris where I went to visit Tin Tin and to be a guest artist at his shop Tin Tin Tatouages.
I was in Paris for a week, during which I did alot!
During my stay, I was able to do a few tattoos, his shop is great and it's in a really cool area of Paris. I had a really fun time hanging out there, everyone there was really cool, it was great to be able to watch Tin Tin and the other talented artists who work with him at work and to have the opportunity to briefly work along side them was a real honor!

If you ever find yourself in Paris I suggest you stop in to Tin Tin Tatouages, who knows you might even get lucky and be able to collect a tattoo while you're there!

I was also able to see a bit of Paris while I was there, I spent a day at the Louvre and was in awe of the many masterpieces that hang in every corner, it was a vast museum and I'm sure I didn't see everything. Viewing the works of the master painters is a huge inspiration for me, the paintings really speak to me, I could spend hours just looking at one of them.
While in Paris I was also lucky enough to see a group art show at La Halle Saint Pierre, near the Montmartre area of Paris, which features an entire room of paintings by my good friend Titine Leu, this show is only up for a limited time so I was really lucky to be there while it was on!
I went to the catacombs which was a really special place for me I spent a few hours down there pondering the lives of the bones I was witness to and thinking about the history of the people entombed there.
...And I even got to spend some time relaxing in the beautiful French countryside with Tin Tin's family who were great hosts and some of the nicest people I've met!
Paris was great, I love Paris!

After Paris, I went to visit my good friends the Leu family, in Switzerland!
Filip and I did a collaborative back-piece on Jonny Murdoch, a tattoo artist from Victoria, B.C..
I had met Jonny in 2010 at the Saskatoon Tattoo Convention, he asked me then if I would be interested in doing a skull back-piece in collaboration with Filip Leu. Filip and I had worked on another back together a couple of years ago and that one was alot of fun, so to get to do another one with him, and for it to be a skull, well of course I said yes!
He contacted Filip who also agreed to do it, and so we met up in Ste-Croix, Switzerland at Filip's shop to do the tattoo.

We spent one day doing concept sketches then drawing the piece directly on his back, planning it out and making sure it all works. The next day we tattooed it, Filip and I worked together at the same time switching sides every now and then so that we both worked on every area of the tattoo. The session lasted six hours and we were able to complete the tattoo.
That was alot of fun, and it was an honor to once again work with Filip!
After the collaborative tattoo, I spent the week mostly relaxing, we made some music, I painted, hung out at the tattoo shop a bit, I got to have a great visit with Filip and Titine, I got to see Loretta, Tania and Ajja as well as some other friends.
At the end of my trip Filip tattooed my thigh, he did a tattoo inspired by one of his paintings to go with my other thigh which he did a few years ago, also inspired by one of his paintings.
I had a great time visiting the Leu family and I hope to see them again soon!

This print has been printed on high quality Arches lined paper, the reason I chose this paper was to be as close to the paper that was commonly used to print on in the early days of print (from about the 1400's to the 1800's), which is within the time period I was thinking about when creating this work (the late 1700's, before the days of the long drop). It is referred to as lined paper because when you hold it up to the light you can see lines (sort of like a water mark), this is due to the way the paper was made.

Got home about a week ago from Los Angeles, where I was a part of the "Tattoo Masters Invitational" Tattoo Convention put on by Permanent Mark. It was a blast, I had a great time! I got to see some old friends and meet some legendary tattooers!
One of the highlights was a roast of Hanky Panky!
As well it was fun to visit with everyone, meet some really cool people and do a few tattoos.
I would like to say thank you to Permanent Mark for inviting me to be a part of this great event!
Before the convention, I spent a few days chilling out in Hollywood, a super fun town that until now, I had only spent a little bit of time in.
I got to see alot, I went to the beach, I walked all over Hollywood, went to the "Ripley's, Believe it or not..." museum, went to the Museum of Death, went to a Rush concert, went to a few tattoo shops, went to a cemetery, all the fun stuff!
Before I went to L.A., I was in Toronto for a week, with Alex and Jay. We went there for the annual "Northern Ink Xposure" tattoo convention, which was a great time as usual! This was Jay's first time working at a tattoo convention!
We also went there to help Damian McGrath put together an art show which was on display during the convention it was called "Death", it was a group show where each artist was sent a coffin shaped board and asked to do their interpretation of... you guessed it...Death! The show was fabulous and Alex, Jay and I are proud to have been a part of it!

On a sad note, I just learned yesterday of the passing of Bill Jamieson a great guy who would often have groups of crazy tattooed people over to his lovely home in Toronto to show off his collection of oddities, rest in peace.

Saskatoon and beyond...

Wow, it's been a busy couple of months since I last posted...
In April, J. Majury and I went on a road trip to Saskatoon for the "Ink Alley Tattoo Convention"! This was the second year that I have been to this convention and it is alot of fun, Saskatoon is a great city and we met alot of cool people and saw some cool tattoos too!
This was also the first time in well over a decade since I went on a road trip of any kind, it was really fun to drive and get out in the country. Along the way we picked up Sean Treble from Planet Caravan Tattoo in Regina. We all had a great time in Saskatoon, if you're in the prairies, don't miss this show next year!

Back home, things have been busy around the shop, working on alot of tattoos for folks as well as working on some paintings and other art projects.
I finished two paintings in the last while, both for upcoming projects, one of which is the "Death" art show which will be on June 16th. at the Hilton in downtown Toronto. Alex and Jay also did paintings for the show which was curated by Damian McGrath of Tattoos.com with some assistance in curating from Skull and Bones Gallery.
The "Death" show will mark the beginning of the Toronto Tattoo Convention ( N.I.X.) weekend, so if you're in the Toronto area, come on down and check out the show, here's the info..."Death" , hope to see you there!

"The Original Coffin of Louis Riel"

On the 16th of November, 1885, Louis Riel, the founder of Manitoba and leader of the Metis people was hanged for treason in Regina, Saskatchewan. After the execution, his body was put into this coffin and was originally slated to be buried in the gallows enclosure in Regina, but an order from the Lieutenant-Governor changed that plan. Instead his body was sent home to his mother's home in St. Vital, where he was put into a more elaborate coffin and after a time of lying in state, was buried in the churchyard of the St. Boniface Cathedral.
The original coffin was kept by his family and for years held his personal belongings, and papers. Some years later, the family donated it to the St. Boniface cathedral where it remained until a fire destroyed the cathedral. Miraculously, the coffin survived but was damaged, losing most of the lower half of the coffin to the fire. Today the coffin resides in the St. Boniface Museum.

Calgary 2010

This past weekend I was in Calgary for the tattoo convention there. I had alot of fun seeing everyone!
This time around I got to go around and visit with people for two out of the three days, as opposed to tattooing the whole time, which was nice. But of course, eventually I got the tattoo bug and ended up tattooing on the Sunday ha ha.
Thank you to Steve Peace for putting on a great convention and for having me, and also thanks to Damian McGrath for convincing me to go this year, it was a blast.

As always we had alot of fun at the Toronto Tattoo Convention (NIX).
Along with the tattoo convention this year was the "Highway to Hell" art show, featuring painted skateboards which were auctioned off to "Skate for Cancer" charity. Click here to see all the skateboards in the show.

Highway to Hell Skateboard Show

If you are in the Toronto area this weekend, come and check out the "Highway to Hell" art show and skateboard auction at the Hilton on Richmond St. (Downtown).
This show is a part of the Northern Ink Xposure Tattoo Convention (NIX), which is taking place as well this weekend in the same hotel.
Each artist in the show was given a skateboard to paint in a heavy metal theme, the boards will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be donated to "Skate for Cancer".

A couple of weeks ago I went to Switzerland to see Titine Leu's art show.
The art show was amazing! I love Titine's new paintings she is one of my favorite artists, alot of people came to the show, actually it was wall to wall people, I am so happy for Titine! Here is a link to the gallery web site where the show was in Lausanne... Click here.

Saskatoon

I just spent the weekend in Saskatoon, hanging out with some cool cats at a great tattoo convention.
I got to see some old friends and make some new ones.
I did skull tattoos all weekend with one exception, my friend Sean Treble and I did a collaborative tattoo on his mom (Wanda) of some flowers, it was a great experience collaborating with Sean on a tattoo, thanks Sean!
Another fun thing for me was tattooing skulls at Rites of Passage Tattoo until 6:30 am on Sunday night!
I had a good time in Saskatoon, here are some pictures of the tattoos I did and a few other pictures from my trip...

Comfortable in both colorand black and grey work, J. enjoys tattooing a variety of different styles particularly anything of asian influence or traditional americana.

Coquille Or Be Killed

I had never personally heard of coquille paper until one day I got a message inviting artists to do a drawing on coquille paper for an upcoming book, coquille or be killed. The idea was to do a sketch on coquille paper using only a black Prismacolor pencil. The paper gives it a unique textured look, kind of like pointillism.

Toronto 2009

I just got back from Toronto where I attended the Northern Ink Xposure tattoo convention once again. I had a great time and was very busy all weekend tattooing and visiting with old friends.
Alex and I actually arrived in Toronto on Tuesday, a few days before the convention so that we could participate in an art fusion event at the Berkley Cathedral.
Lets back up a couple of weeks first....
At the beginning of May, Alex and I received two plaster skulls in the mail, these were sent out to about 45 artists each of which were asked to decorate the skull however they saw fit. The skulls would later be put on display and up for auction to support a Toronto children's arts program.
So back to the event now... the skulls that everybody made were put on display at this old cathedral and Alex and I along with Paul Booth, Glen Paradis, Hailin Fu and Joe Hegarty, did a big acrylic painting in front of what was a party for music industry folks kicking off the North By Northeast music festival which was on in Toronto at the same time we were there.
Later the skulls were put on display for the duration of the tattoo convention in the lobby of the Hilton hotel. The skulls all sold in an exciting auction situation with people shouting out bids at the last minute.
The Toronto convention is always fun, if you can, I recommend you check it out sometime, it's every June.

Adventures in Switzerland and Evian

Well, last month I went on yet another trip to Switzerland to visit my old friends the Leu family.
This time however, I made a stop along the way in Evian, France to attend the tattoo convention there.
The convention was really fun and busy, I enjoyed this one alot. There were a few familiar faces to me there but for the most part I had the pleasure of making alot of new acquaintances at this one.
I did a couple of skull tattoos and worked on this sleeve that I had started in Milano a few months previous.
Evian was a nice place, very picturesque, I wanted to go and drink water from the source of Evian water but it was closed, oh well maybe next time.
After the convention I took a boat across lake Geneva to Lausanne, Switzerland, where I found some of the folks from the convention hanging out at The Leu Family's Family Iron tattoo shop. It was a great end to the tattoo convention weekend.
Thank you to Dats, who organized the tattoo convention for being a great host.
In the week that followed I went and stayed with Filip, Titine and Loretta in there cool funky old house in Swiss farm country where we wrote and recorded music most of the rest of the week.
It was a great relaxing and creative time.
Oh, did I mention I helped them move 7 tonnes of wood. hahaha
At the end of the week Filip and I went into Lausanne once again to work on a collaborative backpiece. Jesse Tseronis (aka Jesse Winchester) flew in from his home in Winchester, Virginia to have Filip and I start his back together.
Considering that it was a rather large cover up, Filip and I discussed various ideas of what to do and in the end we decided to do a giant dragon claw clutching a black pearl with a skull and snakes within the pearl surrounded by swirling water on his butt and lightning coming off of the pearl.
It all went well and we were able to complete the black work for the piece in about 5 hours.
We will both work on it individually to complete it or perhaps get together again on it sometime, who knows?
To cap things off, the next day before my flight home, Filip finished the tattoo on my leg that he's been working on, it's an abstract piece taken from one of his paintings. I will post pictures of the tattoo in a later post when its all settled in and I can get good pictures of it.
Anyway that was my trip, here are some pictures...

Last week I was in Beijing, China. I went there for a tattoo convention organized by the China Association of Tattoo Artists. I had a great time meeting alot of new people and seeing some incredible tattoo work at the convention. There are some amazing tattoo artists in China! It was my first time in China and together with a small group from North America, we took in some of the sites, and experienced as much of Beijing culture as we could, we had alot of fun times and alot of laughs.
Thank you to Kisen Wang for inviting us all to come to China and for being such a great host.

Toronto Tattoo Convention #10 and Art for the Human Canvas

Skull And Bones Gallery on MySpace.
Skull And Bones Gallery is the name of an online art site which will feature the paintings of Alex Adams and myself, the site is currently under construction and should be up and running soon.
Among other things we are planning to have an online store where you will be able to buy our Limited Edition Art Prints and from time to time original works, online.
For now we have started to build this MySpace page to accompany the site and to help spread the word.

Toronto Tattoo Convention 2007

Alex and I will be at the ninth annual Northern Ink Xposure tattoo convention in Toronto, June 15th-17th, 2007, at the Holiday Inn on King St.

In February Alex and I made an appearance on the French CBC show ZigZag.
The first of two segments, that one focused mainly on the tattooing aspect of our art. In this segment they will focus on our paintings and everything around that side of our art.
It will air on Monday, March 19th at 6:30 pm (central canada time) on CBC (The French channel), after the news.

There will be an interview and shots of us working, both painting and tattooing.

Jason Berezuk

I'm sad to say that an old friend of ours, Jason Berezuk has passed away. He was someone who Alex and I became very good friends with in the 1990's and we spent alot of time together back then. He was a special person and will always have a special place in our hearts. We will miss him.

Jason was a brilliant body piercer and suspension artist, he also wore the first full back tattoo I ever did, here you can see it (above).

Toronto was lots of fun, it was great to meet lots of new and interesting people and see some old friends.
One of the best parts was doing an "Art fusion" performance with Bob Tyrrell and Paul Booth.

Festival of fear

I will be attending the "Festival of fear" horror festival in Toronto on September 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
On Friday, September 1st, there will be an Artfusion event in which Bob Tyrrell, Paul Booth and myself will create some collaborative artwork at the festival.
This promises to be a great time for all who are into horror movies and the horror genre, try to make it down to the Metro Toronto convention center to see this if you can.

Just got back from Toronto a few days ago.
Thanks to everyone who attended the Darkness accends/Sideshow art show at MOCCA it was a great turn out.
I had a great time hanging out with everyone at the tattoo convention (N.I.X.) as well nice to see you all.
The best thing of all was when Alex flew out on Saturday to surprise me at the art show, I had no idea and it was the best thing that could have happened!

In general terms the exhibition Darkness Ascends is intended to consider dark aspects of the human psyche that seem to be embedded in our consciousness; troubling, disturbing, and evil, perhaps, yet integral to the identity of our species, of who we are. Often said to be in full eclipse at the turn of each century, there are many historical examples of artistic and vernacular expressions that have been inspired by demons personal and external, by dark forces perceived or imagined, or by actual threats to the self or to humanity. What precisely determines the persistent presence of such forces will never be certain although it may be a way to reconcile ourselves with a universe vast with potential and wonder yet seemingly characterized by banal routine, abjection and unspeakable cruelty. Indeed, darkness or evil may be regarded as elements necessary to our existence. Specifically, however, Darkness Ascends is intended to explore the internal and exterior conditions, the tensions and anxieties particular to our current era, adrift as we are in the shadowy twilight of failed Modernist and Western dreams.

The exhibition Sideshow takes place in MOCCA’s media lounge and is intended as a thematic compliment to Darkness Ascends. This exhibition features artworks by three internationally renowned artists whose practices range from tattoo and illustration to more traditional fine art media. If life is a circus, these cats are the freaks!

All exhibitions and activities at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art are supported by Toronto Culture, the Ontario Arts Council, BMO Financial Group, individual memberships and private donations. Here are the latest prints from Alex adams.
The original art was done in graphite, charcoal and ink on paper and we are pleased to now be able to offer these works of art as giclée prints.
These prints are of exceptional quality and very true to the original artwork.
They are printed on archival (Arches) acid free paper and are the same size as the original artwork (35x54 cm).

Well another year is now almost over.
2005 was a fun and very busy year, Alex and I did alot of the art projects we wanted to do and completed some big tattoo projects that we've been working on.
Some of the years other highlights were...
- The Calgary tattoo convention, this was a great convention and I finally got to pay a visit to Smiling Buddha tattoo to say hello to Paul Jeffries.
- Alex and I became members of the National tattoo association in 2004 and this year we attended their convention in Miami.
- The rebuilding of our web site this year was something that we had been wanting to do for a long time and a big thank you to Micheal Wachs for making this happen.
- Alex and I oganized and participated in an art performance including other tattoo artists which took place at the N.I.X. convention in Toronto, special thanks to Damian Mcgrath for helping us with this and supporting us.
- I spent two weeks in Switzerland with the Leu family in July and had a great time visiting them. Filip started a new tattoo on my leg this trip.
- In 2005 we were featured in Tattoo life magazine, Gasoline (music magazine) as well as the latest issue of Tattoo and piercing magazine (on the stands now), also thank you to John Irving for mentioning us in his latest novel "Until i find you"
- The London tattoo convention and art fusion camp, what a great time that was, see my previous post about London in this blog.
- Running off to Vancouver to fill in two backs in four days (see previous post)

Then of course there are all the tattoos we worked on and I would like to thank all of our customers for another great year.

In the new year we plan to make more updates to our web site as well have some new prints and artwork for sale and who knows what else the new year will bring.

Twin palms

Ok heres a story...
These two guys who are identical twins asked me to do matching back tattoos for them.
The subject they asked for was a sort of beach scene with palm trees, these guys surf and spend alot of time in tropical sunny places around the world so this tattoo was an obvoius choice for them and suits them very well.
I have known these guys as customers for many years and so I felt comfortable with suggesting a twist on the project. The idea was to make two backs that match as a set but are each one unique and that when the two brothers come together the tattoos both make one scene.
Because the twins spend alot of time in the sun we chose to do the tattoo with a very minimalist aproach, using only black silhouette shapes for the palms and minimal shading for the background, this way they can tan thier tattoo without worrying so much about losing the image to fading or sun damage.
The twins live in Vancouver, B.C. and last winter they flew out to see me to have the outlines done. Shortly after that the twins had the idea that I should come out to Vancouver and work on them there, after a little bit of arm twisting I agreed.
My friend and kick ass tattoo artist Steve Moore offered me the use of his studio to do the work.
Steve is a very talented and cutting edge tattoo artist who recently opened his own studio and so I was excited to have the chance to work with him and be in his new environment.

So, i went there for the week, I worked on the twins for four days straight, eight hours each day at a grueling non stop pace. It was tough and hard work but they did it and we completed both backpieces.
It was a fun project to work on and it was great hanging out with Steve and of course the twins, Troy and Rory.

Home from London

Alex and I had great time in London!
It was nice to meet many people as well as visit with old friends.
The convention was really good and big, it was like three floors and they were all packed, it took place at the Old Truman brewery in the White chapel area of London.
A definate highlight was taking place in the art camp presented by Paul Booth and company and the Leu family. Alex and I have participated in "the artfusion experiment" many times in the past and this was the second art camp we have been in, the first one was in San Francisco in 2002. The idea of art camp is a group of artists get together to create collaborative paintings. It's always fun to work with others and the collaborative process produces artwork that could only be created this way, it is a truly unique thing.

Alex and I did alot of running around while we were in London and saw many great things.
One thing that we will always remember is our visit to Highgate cemetary in north London, it's always been a dream of Alex's and mine to visit this place and it was amazing.
